What is An Scéim Cónaithe?

Trinity College Dublin has an Irish language residency scheme in place for undergraduate students in years 1-4. The scheme aims to offer students an opportunity to live in a mini-Gaeltacht in university accommodation. They live with other Irish-speaking students and are encouraged to use the language in their daily lives. The scheme supports the university's Irish language activites and promotes the language among the student community.

Twelve spaces are offered in Irish apartments located in Trinity Hall. A €1,000 grant payment is made to students on meeting the conditions of the Scheme. It is open to students from across Ireland and abroad who are fluent in Irish and wish to speak it on a daily basis.

Hear from the students!

Áine Ní Dhufaigh

First Year Occupational Therapy Student

Is mise Áine Ní Dhufaigh as Contae Mhuineacháin. D’fhreastail mé ar Ghaelscoil Ultain agus lean mé ar aghaidh le mo scolaíocht lánGhaeilge i gColáiste Oiriall. Tá sé mar phribhléid agam a bheith mar bhall de Scéim Cónaithe Halla na Trionóide agus grúpa mac léinn sa scéim a bhfuil an tsuim chéanna acu agus muid ag labhairt an Gaeilge le chéile ó lá go lá. Thug an scéim seo deis dom casadh ar dhaoine óga eile tá nasc faoi leith idir na cainteoirí Gaeilge i dTeach na Gaeilge. Tugann an scéim seo seans dom leanúint ar aghaidh ag caint na teanga agus a bheith gníomhach in imeachtaí Gaeilge a chur chun cinn.

I’m Áine Ní Dhufaigh from Co. Monaghan. I went to Gaelscoil Ultain and then carried on my education through Irish at Colaiste Oiriall. It is an honour to be a part of the Scéim Cónaithe Halla na Trionóide and to be with people with similar interests where we speak Irish from day to day. The Scéim gives me a chance to keep speaking my Irish and be a part of creating events through Irish.

Chloe McCormack

Second Year Law Student

Chloe nic Chormaic is ainm dom agus is as contae Chorcaí mé. Bhíos mar bhaill den scéim chónaithe sna hallaí and bhlian seo chaite agus bhí am den scoth agam ann.

Tugann taithí na scéime deis do chuile scoláire ár dteanga dúchais a labhairt go laethúil agus an suim sa Ghaeilge a fhorbairt fiú muna bhfuil sé mar pháirt den chéim a bhfuil á bhaint amach agat.

Táim thar a bheith buíochasach as ucht mo ham mar dalta na scéime agus mholfadh go mór é a dhéanamh más rud é go bhfuil an deis sin agat.

My name is Chloe McCormack and I come from county cork. I was part of the Scéim programme last year in trinity halls and I had a wonderful experience because of it.

The Scéim programme gives students the chance to speak our national language on a daily basis even if Irish isn’t part of the degree you’ve chosen.

I’m extremely thankful for my time as a Scéim student and would highly recommend the experience to anyone that has the chance to take it.
